Farm to Table Gift Guide 2021

Farm to Table gift ideas

A chef’s knife. A microplane. A cast iron pan.

I know it can sound almost like the joke of giving a farmer a pitchfork. But if you or a loved one enjoys cooking farm fresh food in the kitchen, these would all be fabulous gifts!

Receiving an amazing knife set from our in-laws several years ago has truly been the gift that keeps on giving.

But it can sometimes be hard to know where to start. You don’t want to buy random junk for the kitchen that takes up space, but only performs one random task. You want something functional that truly does its job well and allows you or your loved one to enjoy time in the kitchen.

In the spirit of farm-to-table cooking, here are our gift suggestions aimed at bringing joy, functionality, and health to you and yours this holiday season.

The kitchen essentials

Quality products for home-based food prep.

Thrive – We live a long ways from a grocery store. And, who wants to go to the grocery store anyway? Thrive is a great mail-delivery option for organic and natural product essentials. I like to describe it as Whole Foods meets Costco meets Amazon. It’s easy, convenient and affordable to still receive quality products to supplement what we can grow and produce here on the farm.

Dry Farm Wines – A few years ago we discovered Dry Farm Wines subscription service and have never looked back. They work with small family farms using regenerative practices all over the world to make the best, natural wine I’ve ever tasted. It’s free of sugar, 100% naturally fermented and lower in alcohol. All the bottles are lab tested for purity and won’t undo all your efforts to eat clean, nutritious food. You can sign up for their subscription service to receive wines directly shipped to your door (or to a local liquor store if you’re in Utah like us!) monthly or every few months based on your preferences. And if you’re a new customer, you’ll receive an extra bottle for a penny if you use the link above!

Quality knives – Good knives are essential for anyone taking farm-to-table cooking seriously. Whether your breaking down primal cuts of meat, dicing raw fruits and vegetables, or slicing into a homemade loaf of sourdough, you simply cannot achieve great results without quality knives. We’re so passionate about knives, we’re going to give three separate recommendations. First, the absolute best harvest knives come from Opinel. Even if you only have a small herb garden, you’ll appreciate the functionality and durability of an Opinel folding knife. They make kitchen knives as well, and you cannot beat their kids knife set (see the kids section for more details). Second, F Dick knives are excellent for breaking down your farm-raised meats. Whether you’re raising your own animals, or purchasing directly from a farmer in your community, quality butchery knives for boning and filleting are essential. F Dick knives are made of rock solid German steel and they are professional quality. Like Opinel, F Dick has a line of premium chefs knives as well. And, that leads us to our third category, knives for the kitchen. There are so many quality kitchen knives on the market, it really becomes a matter of personal preference. If you’ve never before used “real” kitchen knives, it’s worth visiting a kitchen supply store where you can feel several different brands in your hand. Handle shape, weight, and balance will all influence your opinion, and it’s worth getting it right. That said, we have several Hammer Stahl knives in our kitchen, and we recommend them because they are heavy duty, the blade is made of hard German steel, and the price is reasonable. It’s easy to spend a lot on kitchen knives that end up chipped or tarnished because they’re made of delicate steel or ornate materials that don’t hold up to heavy abuse. That won’t happen with Opinel, F Dick, or Hammer Stahl knives. These knives will be with you for the long haul.

Cookware – Quality cookware is absolutely essential and Le Creuset is one of the very best. Le Creuset has a wide range of products, all of which are great. But, the single most valuable product we recommend is their round enameled dutch oven. There’s a range of sizes, and if you’ve never used a dutch oven before, we recommend a small to medium one. The number of ways you can use a dutch oven are countless, but one of the uses we’ve found it to be indispensable for is baking sourdough bread. We also love our Lodge Dutch Oven, which has a much lower price point, but is still super durable! Check out Tartine Bread if you want to know why.

Lodge cast iron – We know some people are intimidated by using cast iron, but once you season your pan (essentially just heating and adding a film of oil several times), it gradually forms a nonstick surface and is the most versatile cookware ever created. Listen, we love Le Creuset, but to suggest your kitchen should be outfitted with it is a bit over the top for most people. The good news, there are other companies producing very high quality cast iron at a more reasonable price point. Lodge is a USA-based company producing some of the best cast iron products from their own foundry in Tennessee. Lodge is a go to for cast iron products other than the enamel coated dutch ovens mentioned above.

Cutting board – You really only need one good cutting board as long as it is big enough to hold a whole chicken or large roast. However, we find it helpful to have a few cutting boards so we can engage more members of our family in the prep work. Wooden cutting boards are easier on your knives and can be maintained with a simple hand washing. Occasionally it’s helpful to oil wooden cutting surfaces with a mineral or olive oil to prevent it from drying ou

Going beyond the essentials

The “nice to have” items to round out your kitchen.

Instant Pot – The instant pot has been on our gift list for four years in a row. That’s how valuable it is in our kitchen. While we still use it for stewing and pressure cooking, the most frequent and regular use is for making yogurt. We’ve tried several different methods of making yogurt, and the instant pot is by far the most user friendly and it consistently produces excellent results. Given the amount of yogurt we make, that’s a pretty big deal.

Salad spinner – Eating farm to table almost inevitably means you will eat a fair share of lettuce based salads. While you can certainly rinse and shake dry your lettuce leaves, a salad spinner makes the job so much easier. It’s so simple it’s a job our youngest child can easily manage to help get ready for dinner.

Stand mixer – This is a big ticket item that we did without for a long time, but since purchasing our KitchenAid mixer several years ago we have found numerous uses for it. While it is certainly helpful in mixing doughs and batters and will save you a ton of time whipping egg whites or cream, it can do so much more. KitchenAid has numerous attachments and we’ve only just begun to experiment with making fresh pasta and our own ground meat. Thus far it gets two big thumbs up.

Zester/microplane – It’s such a simple tool, yet helps add flavor quickly and easily. We use our microplane multiple times a week for everything from zesting lemons to grating nutmeg or parmesan cheese. While you can often use a box grater to achieve the same purpose, it’s a pretty compact tool we find is worth it.

Farm to Table inspired gifts for kids

Engaging and fun gifts for kids that create learning opportunities while getting them out from in front of a screen and into the kitchen.

Opinel knives – As we highlighted earlier, Opinel knives are exceptional quality and we rely heavily on their folding knives for harvesting and processing garden produce. But, one of our favorite items from Opinel is our kids knife and peeler set. So many kitchen tools designed for kits are dull or made with a bunch of plastic. If you want your kids to be able to contribute in the kitchen, then they need tools that actually work. Opinel’s kids kitchen knife is made of real steel and can actually cut through fruits and vegetables. The finger slot helps kids learn proper technique while keeping their fingers safe. These knives are not toys, they’re real tools that will have your kids practicing their mise en place in no time.

Kids Cook Real Food – Our kids can independently make a handful of meals for the family. It’s not entirely uncommon for us to come back in from milking the cow to find one kid stirring the oatmeal, one making eggs and the other serving up yogurt. Sound crazy? Well, it kind of is…but a big reason for their interest and ability in the kitchen comes from early exposure through the Kids Cook Real Food program. Our little kids’ passion for cooking may be a bit of an anomaly, but the program undoubtedly empowers kids and makes cooking fun for them.

Kids aprons – Our kids all enjoy helping in the kitchen. Anyone who has ever had a little helper making cookies or bread can tell you just how much flour can fly when little hands are in the mix. Hence why we love cute little aprons to help keep some of the mess off their clothes!

Manual Citrus Juicer – It seems like every kid loves juice. Instead of buying sugar filled juice blends at the store, we encourage our kids to try making their own. This little juicer takes some muscle, but is easy enough for our kids to handle on their own as they are squeezing oranges and grapefruits!

Culinary experience – We always love providing experiential gifts when possible. Depending on where you live, consider taking your kids on a culinary date night – perhaps a child-focused cooking class, a local farm tour, high tea at a local tea house or even a special dinner out at a farm to table restaurant.

Gifts for inspiration and education

We’re always looking to learn more and increase our own knowledge and skills, here are a few resources we’ve loved this season.

Audible membership – Audible allows us to enrich our minds without having to stop everything we’re doing. We can have an audiobook playing while we’re prepping food or working out in the garden. Even better, Audible has a robust collection of children’s books, and the kids have found audio books to be an acceptable alternative to us reading aloud when things are hopping in the kitchen.

The following books have provided new inspiration in the kitchen: Salt Fat Acid Heat, The Art of Simple Cooking, Six Seasons: A New Way with Vegetables, The Prairie Homestead Cookbook, Local Dirt: Seasonal Recipes for Eating Close to Home, The River Cottage Smoking and Curing Handbook and Tartine Bread.

Farm to Table Planner – This planner is designed to help you elevate your experience of eating farm to table in your own home every night. Using our 5 step framework, this planner guides you step by step through the process. This is a PDF that can easily be printed and inserted into a 3-ring binder OR for this holiday season you can reach out to us directly at emily@theforbesfamilyfarm.com to have us bind and mail a copy to your loved one.

Seed to Plate Tutorials – For anyone in your life who loves to both grow and cook with fresh vegetables, this online course walks you from seed to plate for 7 popular backyard veggies. In order to gift this to a friend or family member, reach out to us directly at emily@theforbesfamilyfarm.com and we will send you a gift card with special access code to the course.

Choosing a farm to table gift for family and friends can be a wonderful way to show you care and support them in their journey of eating the highest quality local food. While the gifts listed above can be a great start, perhaps you can also find a local food producer to support. Consider purchasing produce, cheese or meat as a delicious part of your gift! I don’t think you’ll receive any complaints!
